Check CD/MP3 compatibility - make sure it can play CD-G (CD + Graphics) format which displays the song lyrics on the screen. Watch out for speakers with tack on DVD players, as they don't necessary support this CD-G format. In addition, if they are not designed from the ground up as a purpose-built karaoke machine, then they likely won't perform like one.

Where can I get the karaoke tracks from? We recommend to use CDG discs (discs? that’s so old school!) as they still offer the best value (around $0.20 per song vs around $1 per song for online downloads) and are usually the best quality by far as they aren't compressed.

Power rating – this can be confused with the actual power output. A power rating of 30-80W for example is normally the actual power used to operate (W). The speaker output and more importantly, quality of the output is highly dependent upon the technology used to deliver the audio. Don't assume a higher speaker voltage is better, as lower quality products may not be able to operate past half volume before the audio becomes distorted or feedback from the microphones is encountered.

Overinflated specifications - also watch out for unrealistic claims such as a Bluetooth range up to 20m. Class 2 Bluetooth used on almost every portable device has a range of 10m. The only Bluetooth class higher than this is Class 1 which is used almost exclusively for industrial applications. If in doubt, ask the supplier to clarify the power output or Bluetooth class rating.

Portability – if this is a key consideration, look for something that uses Li-Ion batteries and solid state technology to give the best power to weight ratio, without needing a trolley to wheel it around.

Supplier credibility - it goes without saying but watch out for importers and drop shippers who may not have even touched their products. You wouldn't buy your bread from a butcher...

"Built for adults and kids alike, this purpose built karaoke machine packs a punch with 25W RMS speakers (35W peak), including 5" full range speakers and 1.5" tweeters for the higher frequencies. Don't be deceived by it's compact size, it is built for portability and uses the latest solid state amplifier technology to provide extremely low power consumption so you can run it for hours off the battery, and also enabling the size and weight to be kept to a minimum.

The audio quality is great and you can also pair up your phone to double as a portable sound system.

You can play CD's, DVD's, CD-G with vocal text output displayed on the 7" screen, or connect the output to your TV. Karaoke machines that connect to your TV but don't have their own LCD display are OK if you want to take over the lounge room, but not ideal as a long term solution.

That's why the built in 7" LCD screen is great as it can be used standalone. It can also be optioned with a built in Li-Ion rechargeable battery so you can set up the system outside for parties, and it comes with both 2 wired and 2 wireless microphones which all work at the same time for up to 4 separate vocalists, in case you feel the need for some Bohemian Rhapsody....

The biggest problem with this unit is when your kids realise that the 7" LCD also doubles as a DVD player......

This unit is really one of a kind - fitting nicely in the product space between the cheap K-mart toy karaoke machines, and high end pro systems around the $2K mark.

Instead of forking out $500 for a DJ for your next kid's party, get yourself one of these for endless hours of bad Frozen ballads and Katie Perry covers. Alternatively, rip out the mics next time you have your friends around for some dodgy ABBA covers after a few drinks. "

everything seems to be working absolutely fine

  2. Great for kids parties! 5 Star Review

We bought this for my daughters birthday party at it worked a treat.
It worked straight out of the box, not needing to pair microphones or anything. The controls on the unit are easy enough to use, even for impatient 7 year olds.
The girls were able to change the discs and tracks without any problem and could even sing with the 4 microphones at the same time.
The sound quality is pretty good, and we were planning to record some of their songs to USB but couldn't pry the girls away from the unit long enough.
You can also use the LCD screen to play DVDs, I understand you can get karaoke video discs but haven't tried this yet.
