After selling my drum kit and having withdrawals, I considered a full size electronic kit, but didn't really want to spend the cash, or make the space.
The Drumskool D2 roll up portable drums are a great compromise - you get the fun of playing, with the portability of playing when and where you want.
Whilst there are 7 different drum kit sounds, I've found I tend to use the same two sounds (one rock, one pop) and they are surprisingly good for a small portable kit. The built in speaker and battery is great as you don't even need to plug the unit in, you just plug in the foot pedal connection, turn it on, and away you go.
If you don't want to annoy the family or your neighbours, just plug in some headphones and go nuts! You can even play along to your favourite songs off your phone or iPodwith the headphones in.
The D2 is great for all levels, from real beginner up to pro as the pads are thick and bouncy with great touch feedback similar to real drums/toms so you can do some intricate stick work, its not just limited to beginners. In effect it's like a practice pad but with real audio feedback, so great to practice on.
These drums are great for buskers, or jamming anywhere anytime, or even creating drum tracks and recording with the MIDI output.
In collaboration with Jamie from The Drum House Music School in Officer, VIC, we've put together some great beginner tutorials - making this a great great gift for the budding drummer to put their toes in the water and give it a try.

I bought this as a gift for my 8yo daughter, and was not disappointed (well ok, maybe just a tiny bit). Having checked out some YouTube reviews, this looked like a quality unit compared to some of the other 'toy' electronic drums kits out there. The drum and cymbal samples are very good quality, although there is a noticeable 'cut-off' on some of them when played at volume. The unit is battery operated and hasn't needed a charge yet (after many hours of playing). The only real disappointment is the tinny speaker that comes with the unit, so my suggestion would be to use a good quality speaker or amp. We run it through my Yamaha Amp and B&W speakers and it sounds BRILLIANT!
It comes with the following features:
- Demo drum beats and instrumental songs that you can play along to
- Variety of drum types
- Volume and Tempo control
- 1 x AUX out for speaker/amp/headphones
- 1 x MP3 input (presumably so you can play along with your fave song)
- Record function
- USB charging
- USB MIDI integration
- Great quality drum and cymbal sounds
- Very responsive
- Demo songs (drums and instrumental) to play along to
- Record feature
- Brilliant sound when played through a good quality speaker or amp
- Rubbish in-built speaker
- Pedals a little too firm, and clicky to operate
If it came with a better speaker, I'd give it 5 stars. At a shade under $100, it's a no-brainer if you're after a super portable decent sounding electronic drum kit, but don't want to spend $$$$.
